Cali Matley

Sixteen and a half years ago (today exactly!) I walked into the Murray Hill Pet Hospital to check out a cat duo needing a home. Splash and Midnight, as they were called, were curled up together in the bottom right cage. I was immediately smitten. Long story short, Splash became Aja and Midnight became Cali.

I didn’t realize at the time how much our lives would change with these two ladies joining our family. Our small apartment was perfect for setting Cali up for a life of needing to be involved with everything all the time forever and ever. The move to our big house was jarring for her to say the least – Prozac became her (and our) best friend.

Our family grew and Cali put up with plenty of obnoxious toddler antics all in the name of attention. Deep down I know she loved it and knew that, in time, she would become the number one baby again. Which she did, of course.

It’s so hard to put into words how much this girl meant to me. She was always there, always a friend to depend on. I always slept better when she was with me.

She and Aja were the absolute perfect souls to find us.  Cali was always the sturdier of the two, only having the occasional ear or eye infection.  Aja’s passing made her the one and only, but I know she missed her sister. She started slowing down a bit more this past year and let us know over the last two weeks that her time with us was soon ending.

Cali left us yesterday afternoon, joining her sister. She was sleeping in one of her favorite spots on the cat tower in the sunroom. And just before her time came, a beautiful butterfly flew past the window – our niece Rena, coming to help her cross over.

We love you so much and will miss you forever. Thank you for finding us.
